Course Description
Planning & Materiality walks through where planning decisions fit in the overall audit lifecycle and how they drive an efficient, risk-based engagement. Using Sunish Mehta’s “audit pipeline” model, the course links US GAAS requirements, risk assessment procedures, assertion-level risks, and further audit procedures so auditors can see how context, “what can go wrong” analysis, and professional skepticism come together in a coherent audit strategy.
The program then drills into the top 10 issues in materiality: defining materiality under AUC 320, setting planning materiality, performance materiality/tolerable misstatement, and clearly trivial thresholds; selecting appropriate benchmarks; incorporating qualitative factors and evaluation materiality; and documenting judgments in a way that stands up to inspection. Practical guidance on reassessing materiality, aggregating misstatements (factual, judgmental, and projected), and considering group-audit implications helps auditors calibrate scope, avoid over- or under-auditing, and connect materiality decisions directly to reporting outcomes.
