Some cities you visit. New Orleans is more of a feeling.
Take an afternoon away from the conference venue and let the French Quarter do what it does best. Two hours on foot, a small group, a local who knows where to slow down — through the streets, courtyards, and quiet corners of the French Quarter. In between the history and storied locations, you’ll hear a jazz line from two blocks away or catch a whiff of something delicious in the air. By the time you circle back, you’ll know the Quarter the way it’s meant to be known: through your senses. It’s the kind of experience you’ll only get with Western.
Meet us at 2:10 PM in the lobby to walk over with us as a group, or meet us at Jackson Square. The tour starts right at 2:30 PM.
Itinerary Highlights
Jackson Square
Painters at the fences. A trumpet from somewhere down Decatur Street. Late-afternoon light on the white front of the cathedral. This is where the walk begins and where the Quarter starts to come into focus.
St. Louis Cathedral
Three spires, a cool shadowed nave, and old stone. Almost three hundred years of services have happened here, and you can feel them in the silence.
The Cabildo
Cool, stone-walled, quiet. Walk into the room where the Louisiana Purchase was finalized in 1803. Feel the gravity of how much of America’s history hinged on one afternoon in this exact space.
Pirate Alley
A narrow lane between the cathedral and the Cabildo, half in shade. Pirates, smugglers, and a young writer named Faulkner all spent time here.
Bourbon Street
Balconies overhead. Music spilling from open doors. Brass, neon, joyous cries, the smell of something fried and something sweet. Take in the vibrance of New Orleans’ most famous, and sometimes infamous, street.
Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop
Candlelight. Low ceilings. Floorboards that have been creaking since the 1700s. The walk ends in one of the oldest buildings in New Orleans, where the past lingers in the room. Or, maybe, that’s the Voodoo Daiquiris talking?
