Estate planning is not just for the wealthy. Personal issues affect the distribution of one’s assets even when the estate tax does not apply. Changes in exemptions and exclusions and the onset of portability give estate planning a renewed focus. All practitioners should be familiar with the terminology, acronyms and basic techniques.
Learning Objectives
Upon completing this course, participants will be able to:
- Recognize basic estate planning documents and their use.
- Understand portability and when it should be elected
- Identify basis concepts such as probate avoidance and estate planning using fits
- Select appropriate deductions for transfers at death to a surviving spouse or charity
