Learning Objectives

Recognize the various issues impacted by recent tax law developments, particularly those related to individual tax brackets, exemptions and deductions, the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT), the child tax credit, alimony, Health Savings Accounts (HSAs), education plans, and energy credits. Determine the key business tax issues affected by recent legislative changes, including corporate tax rates, entertainment expenses, tax credits and deductions, bonus depreciation, expensing rules, standard mileage rates, employment taxation, the low-income housing tax credit, Section 1031 exchanges, partnership taxation, insurance deductions, excessive compensation, and investment income. Specify differences between various retirement plans, and determine estate tax considerations by identifying trust income tax rates and applicable exclusion amounts.
