Course Description

This course explores how fair value concepts are applied in many of the more complex areas of financial reporting under U.S. GAAP. It examines the role of fair value in business combinations, impairment testing, and financial instruments, including the valuation of acquired intangible assets, contingent consideration, goodwill, long lived assets, debt instruments, equity investments, and derivatives. The course also discusses common challenges associated with fair value measurements, including management bias, aggressive assumptions, valuation uncertainty, the use of valuation specialists, and key audit considerations. Throughout the course, the focus remains on applying the principles of ASC Topic 820 to develop fair value measurements that reflect market participant assumptions and are supported by appropriate evidence.
