Where the Cultures of Colonial Mexico and Old Texas Meet Modern America

With its bold Texan attitude and historic sights, San Antonio provides a glimpse into old Texas in a modern, thriving city. Popular attractions include old Spanish missions-the most famous of which is the Alamo-colonial architecture holdovers, and historic hotels and theaters. The River Walk meanders through downtown San Antonio, providing a great way to take in many of the city's sights from the vantage point of cypress-lined pathways along a gently flowing river. If you're looking for a bit more excitement in a modern setting, several amusement parks call the city home. The city also hosts a plethora of museums and galleries, the most famous being the San Antonio Museum of Art. There's no shortage of things to do in the city where the cultures of colonial Mexico and old Texas meet modern America.

River Walk Cruise

Monday, September 24, 2018

2:45 p.m.–4:00 p.m. | $19.00

One of the best ways to experience the ambience of San Antonio is cruising down the San Antonio River along the River Walk. From the boat you’ll see La Villita, the original site of the town settlement; San Fernando Cathedral; and the Alamo. From the earliest days of San Antonio, the river flooded repeatedly whenever there were heavy rains. The worst flood occurred in 1921 when there was tremendous destruction of property and tragic loss of life. There was serious talk of paving over the river and turning it into an underground storm drain; however, some far-sighted citizens waged a spirited campaign and the River Walk was saved. This narrated cruise, which is both entertaining and relaxing, is 50 minutes long and travels more than 2 miles down the river.

Participants will be picked up by boat at the hotel entrance. Price includes narrated cruise. Pick up at Hotel Contessa.
Missions & City Tour

Tuesday, September 25, 2018

2:00 p.m.–5:00 p.m. | $69.00

On this tour, you’ll visit three of the area’s famous missions— Mission San Antonio de Valero, Mission San José and Mission Nuestra Señora de la Purisima Concepción de Acuña. Known as the “Queen of the Missions,” Mission San José is the largest of the missions
and was almost fully restored to its original design in the 1930s by the Works Projects Administration. Spanish missions were not churches but were communities, with the church as the focus. Mission San José is an example of how all missions might have
looked over 250 years ago. Mission Nuestra Señora de la Purisima Concepción de Acuña is a handsome stone church that was dedicated in 1755. It appears very much as it did over two centuries ago. It stands proudly as the oldest stone church in America that has not been restored. In its heyday, colorful geometric designs covered its surface, but the patterns have long since faded or been worn away; however, original frescos are still visible in several of the rooms. Originally established in 1718 as Mission San Antonio de Valero, the Alamo served as a home to missionaries and their Indian converts for nearly 70 years. In the early
1800s, the Spanish military stationed a cavalry unit at the former mission. The soldiers referred to the old mission as the Alamo (the Spanish word for cottonwood) in honor of their hometown Alamo de Parras, Coahuila. San Antonio and the Alamo played a critical role in the Texas Revolution. Next, it’s on to El Mercado, the largest Mexican marketplace outside of Mexico. There, the delightful experience of bargain hunting and unique shopping awaits you. Just across the way, the Farmers Market Plaza (shops and food court) combines the cultural, artistic, and ethnic influences of the Southwest and Mexico.

Price includes tour, transportation, tax, and gratuity.
Dinner at La Gloria’s Restaurant in the Pearl District

Wednesday, September 26, 2018

Reservations at 6:00 p.m.

We will go to dinner at La Gloria’s Mexican restaurant. La Gloria is a place that was created to celebrate the rich and delicious street foods from interior Mexico. From tacos al pastor in Mexico City, tlayudas in Oaxaca, tococtéles de mariscos from Veracruz, Mexico's street foods are as unique and colorful as its traditions, people and culture. La Gloria means "the heavens," and our wish is that you experience heaven on earth through dining with us. Remember,"No hace falta morir para llegar a la Gloria."("You don't have to die to go to heaven.")

We will meet at La Gloria’s. Participants will pay the restaurant directly.
