Webcast Technical Requirements & Support

Technical Requirements
The following system and hardware requirements are recommended for optimal Webcast viewing with Mediasite Viewer:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows 2003, Windows Vista, or Macintosh OS X
  • Display resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels or higher
  • Windows-compatible sound card
  • Computer speakers
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1 or higher
  • Windows Media Player 9.0 or higher
  • Broadband Internet connection (256 Kbps or higher)

Troubleshooting

If the Webcast doesn't appear on your screen:
Configure your computer to allow site pop-ups.

If the video component doesn't play:
You must have the current version of Windows Media Player--9.0 or higher--installed on your computer. If you need to install it, you can download it free from the Microsoft Windows Media Web site.

If you can't hear the Webcast:
Check your volume settings, which could include:

  • Webcast volume: located just below the video presentation window.
  • Computer volume: adjust the volume slider and make sure "mute" is not activated.
  • External computer speakers: adjust the volume setting on your speakers.

If the video stops (freezes) during a Webcast:
Below the video window you'll see "Start" and "Stop" buttons. If the video stops/freezes, press the "Stop" button followed by the "Play" button. It will take a moment for the video and audio to synchronize and buffer. If the problem continues, close the Webcast and then log back in. You will be returned to the live feed, not to the place you were when the video stopped.

Webcast Viewing with Windows Vista
Because Windows Media Player plug-in .dll files are not installed with Windows Vista, by default, Windows Media Player can only be embedded in Internet Explorer. To view Mediasite presentations using Firefox over Windows Vista:

Webcast Viewing on a Mac
The following information and viewer-end solutions should enable you to run Webcasts on a Mac.

Browsers that will play Mediasite presentations on a Mac

  • Safari 1.0.3 or higher (Safari 1.2.4 or higher is recommended)
  • Firefox 1.0 and higher
  • Netscape 7.2 for Mac OS X

Flip4Mac plug-in issues
Mediasite presentations will not work if you have installed the Flip4Mac Windows Media component for QuickTime on your Mac. Follow these instructions to disable the plug-in:

  • Click on your desktop and select "Apple > System Preferences."
  • Click "Flip4Mac WMV" under "Other."
  • On the "Plug-in" tab, clear the "Use Flip4Mac WMV Internet Plug-in" checkbox.
  • Exit the dialog to save your changes.

Delay before playback begins:
When viewing a Mediasite presentation running Mac OS X 10.4, there may be a long delay before playback begins. (This problem only seems to affect Mac version OS X 10.4.) In some cases, this delay can be a minute or more.

  • Open the Windows Media Player by selecting "Go > Applications > Windows Media Player."
  • From the toolbar, select "Windows Media Player > Preferences > Network Settings."
  • Uncheck "TCP" and "UDP" boxes and click "OK."

Intel-based Mac:
Windows Media Player 9 for Mac is not a Universal Application and must be run under Rosetta emulation on an Intel-based Mac. As such, the browser must also be forced to run under Rosetta.

  • Close all open browser windows.
  • Select "Go > Applications" to open the applications directory.
  • Right click or ctrl-click your browser-for example, Safari or Firefox--and click "Get Info."
  • In the "General" section, check "Open Using Rosetta."
  • The next time the Web browser is launched, it will run under Rosetta emulation.
